I saw an exhibition in London a couple of years ago with several of Castiglione’s paintings – and
remember hearing at the time that Da Shan was going to play him in a 24 part tv series.

Does any one know what its Chinese name was ? Was it any good? Maybe it could be added to the
grand first episode project too?

PS: Wikipedia link if you’ve not heard of him:

There’s this page which has the name 宫廷画师郎世宁, but it’s on Youku as
康乾盛世秘史 – first episode here.

I watched a few snippets of it. There’s some fantastic wig action, and I learned a lot aboot how
Jesuits speak.

peterlkj -

Thanks for the link – watched it this afternoon – I didn’t realise it was a comedy!

Yeah, I’m not sure what’s worse, the acting, the scripts, or the wigs

Hey guys I was wondering what you guys thought about the free video lessons you can find on
websites such as youtube.

I put together a review and video of four of the more popular free Chinese language lesson videos
(Ask Benny, Active Chinese, Easy Chinese, and Mandarin Tube). Have you guys used these videos in
your studies? And if so which did you guys like? Or are there some other ones which you think are
pretty good?

The review is just my take on these videos…but I wanted to hear what you guys thought about
these free videos. Do you think you can learn Chinese by just watching these? (I guess if you were
really lazy…)

I find the following free sites to be most useful:

http://www.learn-chinese-through-music.com/ – mostly pop music but it’s linked with music videos
on youtube as well as having lyric sheets in English, pinyin, and characters

www.chinesepod.com – over 500 podcast lessons broadcasted from Shanghai

www.myhappyplanet.com – a site that has some good videos if you haven’t developed too far but the
pen-pal service is the best

Cool thanks for the resources. I did a review about a week or two ago on the learn chinese through
mp3 website. I really liked that website. It’s a fun and cool way to learn.

Learn Chinese – Computing and Technology VS Textbooks and Resources -

Just to clarify:

This forum is for discussion of computing issues relating to Chinese. Ie:
I can’t get Chinese characters to display on my Atari 64.
How can I convert GB2046 to UTF-8.5
And similar technical issues

Textbooks and Resources is for discussion of anything that helps you learn Chinese, INCLUDING
software / hardware. Ie:
I’ve developed a new flashcard program, want to try it?
Is Wenlin / Plecodict / any good?
Will a PDA help me learn Chinese?

There’s obviously a certain amount of overlap, but if you try to choose the most appropriate forum
you’ve got a better chance of getting the help you need. I’ll move topics which I notice are in
the wrong place. If they could go in either forum, I’ll just leave them.

If you can’t figure out where it should go, put it anywhere.

Bump for this, as a number of topics are being put in the wrong place. Not a major issue, but it’s
helpful to keep things organized.

Southernjohn -

hi Roddy-

Just a suggestion. but have you thought about just merging the two? I for one have learned a lot
from both, but I don’t necessarily see that they are so different. If there is overlap, and so
many people posting in the wrong place, perhaps the two sub-forums should just be merged.

just a thought,

Southernjohn.

Peace to all sub-forums and to wherever they may reside.

adrianlondon -

I find the split confusing.

I’m not sure, for example, how “should I use a PDA to help me study” doesn’t fall into the
“Computing and Technology” subject, especially as nearly all the issues are likely to be about
surfing the net in China and font/hanzi display problems.

roddy -

Quick reminder – this forum is for Chinese computing issues. If it’s not specific to Chinese /
China in some way, please post in the Chat forum.

Sam Addington -

Dear Roddy,

I read your post AFTER my posting regarding the Besta. Please move my posting to the appropriate
forum!
