A major airport in northeast China’s Liaoning Province was closed Monday for the second time in two days as runways were covered by a thick layer of snow, authorities said.

Taoxian International Airport in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning, closed at 1:10 p.m. and was expected to remain shut until 8 p.m. provided crews cleared the runways, airport officials announced.

The airport was closed for more than five hours Sunday due to the snow. Scores of flights were canceled or delayed.

The number of flights affected by the airport’s second closure was not immediately available.

Meanwhile, at least 10 highways in Liaoning were partially closed due to the snow, traffic officials said.

Snow started to fall in Liaoning on Saturday and is expected to continue till Tuesday. In some areas, snow was 9 centimeters deep on the ground, the provincial weather forecast bureau said.

URUMQI, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) — Seven children were severely injured Monday when about 100 students fell on top of each other while descending stairs at a primary school in Aksu City in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, local officials said.

The accident happened at the city’s No. 5 Primary School at about midday when students rushed down the stairs at the end of class, witnesses and officials said.

The seven children are among 41 children admitted to Aksu’s No. 1 People’s Hospital following the accident.

Provincial health authorities have dispatched a team of medical experts to assist in treating the victims, but heavy fog at the airport in Urumqi has delayed their departure.

The school has more than 1,800 students.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the stampede.

Singapore’s pro-trade agency International Enterprise (IE) Singapore on Monday opened its 10th Overseas Center (OC) in China’s Hubei province.

Based in Hubei’s capital city Wuhan, the new OC will focus efforts on Central China, in particular Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces.

The center will bring IE Singapore and Singapore Economic Development Board under one roof to facilitate trade and investment activities.

It will assist Singapore-based companies to explore business collaborations and opportunities with the Chinese enterprises, help increase in-market knowledge of these companies as well as to build networks with the local governments and businesses. It will assist Chinese companies to explore international operations from Singapore, and help increase the companies’ familiarity of the international marketplace.

“The establishment of the Singapore Center in Wuhan is timely,” said Sam Tan, Singapore’s Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Trade & Industry, and Information, Communications & the Arts, “Singapore- based companies have the relevant expertise and experience to share and contribute to the developing needs of Central China in various industries,” he added.

In 2009, there were a cumulative number of 287 Singapore projects in Hubei with cumulative actual investments reaching 770 million U.S. dollars. Singapore’s actual foreign direct investments into Hubei amounted to 138 million U.S. dollars.

IE Singapore currently has Overseas Centers located in China’s Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dalian, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Qingdao, Shanghai and Xi’an.
